Why Time Slows Down during an Accident

چکیده

After an accident, people often report that it felt a lot longer than it actually could have been in real time. Time seemed to slow down during the event. We tried to conduct a safe experiment in our laboratory to simulate a dangerous situation. We had participants look at a screen on which circles either moved on a collision course toward the participant or moved away from the participant. At the same time, we recorded the participant’s brain activation with a brain scanner. When the circle moved toward the participant, that event was judged to last longer than when the circle moved away. This is the effect we wanted to produce: in a situation of “threat,” events seem to last longer. The brain activation showed that an area in the middle part of the brain was especially activated, a region that is often active when events have something personal to do with the participant. In our case, a threatening stimulus approaching is the event that is related to the participant. This is the first study to show the regions of the brain that are associated with a perceived slowing down of time during a threatening situation. REVIEWED BY:

Time Slows Down during Accidents

The experienced speed of the passage of time is not constant as time can seem to fly or slow down depending on the circumstances we are in. Anecdotally accidents and other frightening events are extreme examples of the latter; people who have survived accidents often report altered phenomenology including how everything appeared to happen in slow motion. While the experienced phenomenology has ...

s . ge n - ph ] 9 D ec 2 00 4 Why Time is Future Oriented

We assume that space time is curvature-free. Using statistical mechanics we show that the universe is expanding. We also show that clock slows down when time progresses from present to future. We predict that time advances at the expense of energy towards future. We also show that any time variation in the natural constants is unobservable. The rate of immune escape vanishes when multiple immune responses control an HIV infection.

During the first months of HIV infection, the virus typically evolves several immune escape mutations. These mutations are found in epitopes in viral proteins and reduce the impact of the CD8⁺ T cells specific for these epitopes. Recent data show that only a subset of the epitopes escapes, that most of these escapes evolve early, and that the rate of immune escape slows down considerably. To in...

Risk prediction based on a time series case study: Tazareh coal mine

In this work, the time series modeling was used to predict the Tazareh coal mine risks. For this purpose, initially, a monthly analysis of the risk constituents including frequency index and incidence severity index was performed. Next, a monthly time series diagram related to each one of these indices was for a nine year period of time from 2005 to 2013. After extrusion of the trend, seasonali...
